A Slideshow Of Mary's Career

10th June 2000

Mary produced blistering form in front of her home crowd to beat Spain's Conchita Martinez to win her second Grand slam title. A dream come true for her! She became the first Frenchwoman since Durr in 1967 to the French Open.

Martinez had held serve to take the first game of the match, but from thereon it was Mary who took a grip on the set, reeling off five successive games to sweep to 5-1.She then let two set points go by as Martinez held serve for only the second time, but she was not to be denied and took the opener with a comfortable hold.

Martinez began the second set with greater purpose and broke to establish a 2-0 lead. But Mary delighted the overwhelming majority of the 15,000 spectators by storming back into the set and levelling at 2-2.

The pair shared the next six games to move to 5-5, but neither was able to dominate as Pierce had done in the first set.Yet it was still the world number six who found the best angles, also cleverly putting in the odd drop shot to deceive her opponent. She broke the deadlock by going 6-5 up with a break as Martinez failed to cope with Mary's immense power from the baseline and at the net.

Serving, she moved to 40-30 and match point with a blistering double-handed backhand pass down the line, but was unable to close the match out on her first attempt - thrashing a forehand into the net.

After another routine forehand Martinez had a break point but she netted a forehand.

Mary moved to her second match point with another backhand winner, this time cross-court, but then missed with another backhand error.

Martinez drifted a missed backhand tamely wide to give Mary her third chance to wrap up the match, and this time she made no mistake with a service winner.

Pierce, lifting the trophy to thunderous applause from the centre court crowd, said: "I'm nearly lost for words.

"It was always my dream to have a fortnight like this. It's just an unbelievable feeling to have won.

"The match was tough and I was fearing having to play a third set. I'd like to thank Conchita for such a good match, especially in the second set."

"I'd like to thank all my family. There's a lot of people who've helped me along my way."

She also thanked her fiancé, baseaball star Roberto Alomar and her father Jim.

Runner-up Martinez praised Pierce, saying: "I'd like to congratulate Mary for a great tournament.

"You've played many years here and you've come very close but you played great today."

With the win, Mary's ranking moved up to #3.

Teamed up with Martina Hingis to win the doubles title as well. She became the first player since 1982 to win both the singles and doubles titles at Roland Garros. It was her first Grand slam doubles title.
