After losing to Magui Serna in the second round at Wimbledon, Mary played some matches at the World Team Tennis, where she picked up a shoulder injury. She missed the entire U.S. summer hard court season and entered the U.S. Open without any preparation.

She beat Alexandra Stevenson, Magdalena Maleeva and Lisa Raymond in the first three rounds respectively but then her shoulder got worse and she had to pull out of her 4th round match against Anke Huber.
