Mary made her pro debut at the Family Circle Cup at Hilton Head. At 14-years, 2-months, she was the youngest American to turn pro. Jennifer Capriati broke the record later that year.

Under the watchful eyes of her parents, Jim and Yannick, she qualifyied for the main draw after victories over Caverzasio and Schwartz. Lost to Laura Gildemeister in the first round.
