At the Chase Championships, Mary had her hands full with Anna Kournikova. She seemed out of the match before staging a remarkable comeback.
Kournikova took the first break of the match in the fifth game of the 1st set after Mary hit three consecutive balls long. Kournikova went up 3-2 and held onto the edge until the eighth game, when Mary took advantage of her opponent's weak serve.
In the tiebreak, Kournikova served almost perfectly, forcing two errors by Mary, and forcing another on a blistering forehand.
In the second set, Kournikova had a 5-2 advantage and battled to deuce on Mary's serve. But a strong return by Pierce followed by a netted return by Kournikova left the match 5-3. With Kournikova serving for the match at 5-3, Mary stunned the teenager by breaking her at love and then held to pull even at 5-all.
In the second set tiebreak, Mary featured her own strong service and forehand game.With Kournikova serving, hit hit a forehand volley down the line for a 5-4 lead. She then held her service points to force a third set.
In the third set, Kournikova was utterly defeated. She won only six points in the entire set and failed to win a point on her first serve. Mary on the other hand, won 24 points and committed only two unforced errors to take the set 6-0.
Lost 1-6,2-6 to Martina Hingis in the quarterfinal. Ended the year ranked fifth in the world.
