The Australian Open Final

The match started with Sanchez-Vicario coming out firing, as she broke Mary easily in the very first game. But the next game, Mary repeated the feat. In fact, the first four games were all service breaks. In those four games, Pierce's serving percentage was around 40% of first serves, a lot down on her 80% average for the tournament so far. Sanchez-Vicario was not much better at around 50% of first serves. The fourth game was especially memorable as Mary, down a break, did everything she could to put the set back on serve while the human back-board of women's tennis shoveled everything back at the Frenchwoman. After Mary evened it to 2-2, She blasted away on both flanks, directing the majority of the balls to the top seed's suspect forehand. Mary broke to lead 1-0 in the 2nd set. Sanchez quickly broke back to go up 2-1. That's when Mary took complete control. She reeled off 5 successive games before throwing her arms in triumph. |

The victory made Mary the first Frenchwoman to win a Grand Slam title, since Francoise Durr's 1967 Roland Garros title.
"I think I'll never forget this in my whole life," Mary said. "I think all the hard work has paid off, and it's a great way to start my year."
Her ranking climbed to a career-high No. 3 after the tournament.
Mary donated the racket she used in the final to a Kobe earthquake fundraising auction.
