5 June 1994  The fianl had begun under storm clouds the night before, and only 17 minutes of play were possible before rain intervened. Players had to complete the final on the next day(5th June 1994). Visibly nervous, Mary never hit her rhythm. To her credit, Sanchez Vicario made Mary run for every ball and didn't make a lot of errors.

After losing the first set 6-4, Mary lost her serve at the start of the second set.She quickly broke back, only to drop her serve again. Sanchez Vicario then held to go up 3-1. Mary played two superb games and leveled the set at 3-3. She again dropped her serve to give Sanchez Vicario a 5-3 lead. Arantxa didn't waste this opportunity and close out the match 6-4,6-4 for her second French Open title.

Though she lost the final, the tournament did wonders for Mary's confidence and her ranking rose to #7 for her first Top 10 appearance. She also became the hottest figure in the sport and captured the heart of crowds all over the world.
