Seeded sixth, Mary played her first round match at Roland Garros against Tara Snyder of the United States. Mary dominated the match with her powerful ground strokes, scoring an easy victory.

It was revenge time in the second round, as Mary took on Austria's Barbara Rittner, the player who had beaten her at the 1996 French Open. Mary looked sharp and had no trouble with the Austrian, completely outclassing her 6-1,6-1.

In the third round, Mary got off to a slow start against her young compatriot,Virginie Razzano. After being down 4-2 in the first set, Mary took control, winning the next ten games to book a place in the last 16.

In the fourth round, Mary breezed past Asa Carlson, dropping just 3 games, to reach the quarters at Roland Garros for the second time in her career.
