A Slideshow Of Mary's Career

June 1995

27 June 1995  Won her first official match on grass by beating Sandra Dopfer 6-1,6-2 in the first round of Wimbledon.

"The grass ,I never played on it so I thought it wasn't good for me and I didn't like it. Even when I was 14, 15, 16, when I was playing the other tournaments, I never wanted to play here because of the grass but it was actually fun, I have been hitting pretty well and I have been enjoying it. Now I hope to play on the Centre Court" she said after the match.

27 June 1995  Mary lost an intense second round match to Grass court specialist Nathalie Tauziat in 3 sets. Tauziat was deposed as French #1 when Mary decided to pick up French nationality in 1990. That's the main reason why Tauziat has never accepted Mary as French. And how it showed on the court. As Nick Bollettieri said:
"Tauziat's body language showed it was war. She came to do battle. Mary was gun-shy."
Though Mary later clasped Tauziat's hand and kissed her on both cheeks, the two exchanged unfriendly glances during the game and Tauziat slapped her racket strings like a mugger waiting up an alley. After winning the first set on a net-cord, Tauziat, who later denied there was any tension between the pair, declined to offer the traditional apology but instead thrust up both arms exultantly.

Tauziat insisted: "When she arrived in France, first of all we were against her. But now she plays for us, she's nice to us. She's started to be much better with us." But then she also said, with a dash of relish: "Every chance I get to beat her on grass, I take it. If you play Mary like this, she doesn't like it."
